THE METAL GOD AND THE GOLDEN ARMOR: Rob Halford’s Iconic Jacket — and Ray Brown’s Dark Secret

By Layla Cross | Metal Dominion Magazine | Feature, 2025

In the gleaming, fiery haze of the 50 Heavy Metal Years tour in 2022, one image remains burned into the retina of metalheads around the world: Rob Halford, The Metal God himself, striding across the stage like a deity of defiance, clad in a blazing golden jacket that shimmered like it had been forged in the core of a dying star.

But behind that unforgettable look, behind the applause, behind the adoration — and behind the jacket — lies a story darker than metal’s deepest riff.

And it begins with Ray Brown, the man who designed it.

“It Had to Be Gold.”

Ray Brown, legendary stagewear designer to the gods of rock and metal, has worked with everyone from Ozzy to Axl. But when he got the call to craft Rob Halford’s tour armor for Judas Priest’s half-century milestone, he knew this would be different.

“I didn’t want to just make something flashy,” Brown told Metal Dominion. “This wasn’t Vegas. This was legacy. This was Rob f***ing Halford. The jacket had to be gold — not just in color, but in spirit. Regal, battle-worn, alchemical.”

Constructed over four months in his secluded Los Angeles atelier, the jacket was a masterpiece of contrast — studded with chrome rivets, lined with crimson silk, and framed with razor-sharp epaulettes. Its panels bore symbols inspired by Halford’s personal tattoos, occult geometry, and vintage biker patches.

“It was designed like a relic,” Brown said. “Something you’d find buried in a vault under a cathedral built by outlaws.”

Halford’s team was ecstatic. The jacket debuted in Prague, the opening night of the tour. When Halford emerged from backstage — smoke swirling, the opening riff of “Painkiller” slicing the air — the crowd collectively gasped. That wasn’t a frontman.

That was a warlord.

A Stitch Too Far

But Ray Brown has a confession.

“When I sent the jacket off, I felt a twinge of… guilt,” he told us in a rare, heavily redacted sit-down interview in early 2025. “I had buried something in that jacket. A kind of… sigil.”

At first, we assumed it was metaphorical. A spiritual signature, or a designer’s code. But Brown was dead serious.

“I mean an actual sigil. A binding one. Woven into the lining. Old magic. Something I should’ve left alone.”

Brown, now 69, has always had an eccentric streak — but those closest to him say the 2022 project changed him.

“He stopped sleeping. He was muttering strange things in languages no one understood,” said Fiona Grayson, a former assistant. “There were books in the studio. Not fashion books — occult books. And candles. Always candles.”

Asked why he’d embed a ritual symbol in a jacket for one of the most visible musicians in the world, Brown only offered this: “Because I was told to. In a dream. By the jacket itself.”

The Golden Curse

What followed the tour was stranger still.

Though the shows were musically flawless, those around Halford began to notice… shifts. Small at first.

“He was more intense than usual,” said bassist Ian Hill. “Focused, almost like he was channeling something every night. We joked he was possessed by the spirit of Metal itself.”

But then came the dreams.

“Rob said he started dreaming of a golden temple,” longtime tour manager Steve Fortner told us. “Always the same: massive gates, endless stairs, and a voice calling his name in Latin.”

Night after night, the dreams intensified. Fans started sending in reports of seeing a strange glow around Halford’s figure on stage. Cameras captured it once: a brief flicker of gold light where none should have been.

“It wasn’t a spotlight,” said a Prague photographer. “It was internal. Like he was burning from the inside out.”

Behind the Seams

We asked Brown if he believed the jacket had done something to Halford — or if it had merely amplified what was already inside.

He stared out the window for a long moment before answering.

“Rob Halford has always been more than human on stage. That’s why we worship him. All I did… was give form to that power. But I drew from a deep well. Too deep, maybe.”

He then reached into a folder and handed us a crumpled parchment: a sketch of the original jacket design. On the back was a symbol — an ouroboros surrounded by runes of protection and invocation.

“I stitched that exact image into the inner left shoulder. Right above the heart.”

When we asked if Halford knows, Brown only shrugged. “I doubt it. Or maybe he does. Maybe that’s why he hasn’t worn the jacket since the last show in São Paulo.”

The Final Note

In the months after the tour, Halford retreated somewhat from the spotlight. Though still active, he was quieter, more reflective.

In a rare post-tour blog entry titled “The Flame and the Flesh,” Halford wrote:

“Sometimes the stage gives you more than applause. It gives you echoes. Ghosts. Things you didn’t summon but welcomed anyway. That jacket… it wasn’t just cloth and studs. It was armor. And maybe it took something from me I wasn’t expecting.”

Cryptic? Undoubtedly. But fans — and conspiracy forums — latched onto the comment. “Did Halford get hexed?” read one headline. “Metal Magic: Was Judas Priest’s tour powered by the occult?” asked another.

Of course, there’s no way to prove what’s true.

But Brown remains haunted.

“There’s a reason I don’t take commissions anymore,” he admitted. “I opened a door. Not sure if it closed.”

Legacy in Gold

Despite the whispers and the myths, the golden jacket remains iconic. It’s now encased in temperature-controlled glass at the Metal Hall of Legends museum in Birmingham, on loan from the band — but not without a warning.

Below the exhibit placard is a subtle inscription etched into the frame:

“Do not touch the lining.”

Whether the tales are legend or truth, fans continue to flock to see it — and not just for its craftsmanship.

“I swear it hums,” said 19-year-old fan Jamie Darnell. “Like a low E note. You get too close, and your chest vibrates.”

Even museum staff speak of odd occurrences: sudden electrical spikes, visitors fainting near the display, a scent of ozone in the air.

Rob Halford Speaks

In a brief 2024 interview with Revolver, Halford addressed the rumors with typical grace — and a glint of mystery.

“That jacket was a celebration,” he said. “It was everything Judas Priest stands for: strength, resilience, beauty, defiance. If it carried a little extra charge? Well… maybe that’s what 50 years of heavy metal builds up. A kind of spiritual static.”

Asked if he’d ever wear it again, Halford smiled.

“I think it served its purpose. Let it rest. Some armors aren’t meant to be worn twice.”

Final Curtain

As metal enters its twilight decades, and legends like Halford look both forward and back, it’s stories like these that remind us why the genre endures. Not just for the riffs or the volume — but for the mythology.

The golden jacket is more than just stagewear.

It’s a relic. A warning. A triumph. And maybe — just maybe — a key to something unknowable.

Ray Brown won’t talk about it anymore. Rob Halford won’t wear it again.

But it’s there, sealed behind glass, gleaming like a sun in eternal dusk.

And if you listen closely, you might just hear it whisper:

Metal is forever. But power always has a cost
