Detroit Lions fans have had their fair share of frustrations over the years, but sometimes the best way to deal with the past is to laugh about it. And right now, they have plenty of reason to chuckle at the Minnesota Vikings after their latest move: signing former Lions cornerback Jeff Okudah.
For Detroit fans, Okudah represents one of the biggest disappointments in recent team history. Drafted third overall in the 2020 NFL Draft, expectations were sky-high for the Ohio State product. He was supposed to be the next lockdown corner for the Lions, a franchise player who could anchor their secondary for years to come. Instead, Okudah’s tenure in Detroit was marred by injuries, inconsistent play, and unmet potential.
Okudah’s rookie season was a disaster almost from the start. A core muscle injury hampered his development, and when he did see the field, he struggled mightily. Opposing quarterbacks targeted him relentlessly, and he frequently found himself out of position. The 2021 season was supposed to be a fresh start, but it ended before it really began when he tore his Achilles in the season opener. By the time 2022 rolled around, Okudah showed some flashes of improvement, but it wasn’t enough to convince the Lions to keep him around. They shipped him off to the Atlanta Falcons for a mere fifth-round pick, a clear sign that Detroit had seen enough.
Now, just a year later, Okudah is back in the NFC North—only this time, he’s wearing purple and gold. The Vikings, desperate to bolster their secondary, decided to take a chance on the former top-three pick. While the terms of the deal haven’t been disclosed, one thing is certain: Lions fans aren’t losing any sleep over his departure, and they certainly aren’t worried about him landing in Minnesota.
The reaction from Detroit fans has been a mix of amusement and disbelief. Many are pointing out that the Vikings are essentially picking up the Lions’ leftovers, hoping for a reclamation project that already failed once. It’s the latest in a long line of questionable personnel decisions by Minnesota, a team that has been spinning its wheels trying to keep up with the Lions, who are now the reigning NFC North champions.
What makes this move even funnier for Lions fans is that Okudah struggled even in a Falcons secondary that wasn’t exactly stacked with elite talent. In 2023, he played in 13 games for Atlanta, recording 44 tackles, four passes defended, and zero interceptions. Those aren’t exactly numbers that scream “difference-maker.” Vikings fans might be trying to convince themselves that they can revive his career, but Detroit has already seen this movie before—and they know how it ends.
Meanwhile, the Lions have moved on to bigger and better things. Their secondary has improved significantly under the guidance of general manager Brad Holmes and head coach Dan Campbell. The team’s current defensive backfield, featuring players like Brian Branch and Cam Sutton, is light-years ahead of where it was during Okudah’s time in Detroit. Simply put, the Lions are no longer in a position where they need to take chances on former busts—they’re building a legitimate contender.
So, as Vikings fans try to talk themselves into Jeff Okudah’s “potential,” Lions fans are just sitting back and laughing. They know all too well what Minnesota is getting—a player who never lived up to the hype, one who was already deemed expendable by a team that’s now miles ahead of the Vikings in the NFC North race.
If there’s one thing Lions fans can agree on, it’s this: The Jeff Okudah era in Detroit was a disappointment, but at least they’re not the ones hoping he turns things around. That’s Minnesota’s problem now.
