In order to prepare for the 2026 World Cup, which will bring the world’s top soccer competition to North America at a time when his intermittent tariffs have escalated tensions throughout the continent, President Donald Trump established a task committee on Friday.
Regarding playing the World Cup in the midst of heated debate between the host countries’ leaders, Trump stated, “I think it is going to make it more entertaining.” “It is nice to be tense.”
Trump will serve as the chair of the task group, which will oversee federal security and preparations for the event, which is anticipated to bring millions of tourists to the US, Canada, and Mexico.
After meeting with representatives of FIFA, the international soccer governing body, Trump said, “It is a great honor for our country to have it.” He added that he would like to attend several World Cup matches. As tensions between the US and its neighbors increase, preparations are escalating throughout the continent. Trump has repeatedly threatened to impose tariffs before reversing his position, which has alarmed markets and sparked fears of a trade war and economic downturn. He also disparages Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and reflects on Canada becoming a U.S. state, which has increased nationalism north of the border.
For the first time, the World Cup will be divided amongst nations in 2026, with 48 teams competing in 104 matches across three countries. There will be up to six matches per day, with seventy-eight of the 104 games taking place in the United States and 13 in Mexico and Canada. MetLife Stadium in New Jersey will host the final on July 19.
The task group will make sure that every tourist who comes from all over the world “feels protected, thinks joyful, and feels that we are doing something exceptional,” according to FIFA President Gianni Infantino.
We are here to make the greatest display the world has ever seen,” Infantino stated. In addition to unveiling an ornate trophy that will be awarded to the victor of the 2025 FIFA Club World Cup, which will pit elite soccer clubs against one another this summer before the national teams face off the following year, he offered Trump a personalized game ball.
At a White House cryptocurrency summit, Trump later summoned Infantino to display the prize. He stated that a significant development region for soccer is the United States, where the sport has gained popularity but is still considered a niche activity.
