After joining the Hoops in 1997, the lethal Swedish striker spent the following seven years becoming a legendary character in Celtic history.
On the club’s all-time scoring lists, he is only surpassed by Bobby Lennox and Jimmy McGrory, having scored an incredible 242 goals for Celtic in all competitions while wearing the recognizable No. 7 jersey.
After his skills were eventually recognized by the rest of the world, Larsson—dubbed “The King” by Celtic fans—went on to play for Manchester United and Barcelona.
Before Larsson moved to Everton, he played with Alan Stubbs, a former Celtic defender, for four years, from 1997 to 2001.
Larsson would have been among the finest Stubbs had ever played with, and rightfully so, until he moved to Everton.
It would only be a year after he joined Everton, however, that he would play at Goodison Park alongside a young and incredibly gifted Wayne Rooney. According to Stubbs, Rooney is a greater player than Larsson, which may seem confusing to some Celtic supporters.
When asked to rank his top two players from his career, Stubbs said, “I have got Wayne at the top and really just below him is Larsson.” “Larsson was incredible. As a center-back, he made my passes look so easy. He would just go there (backwards) and then peel away. Luckily, his runs were that good that I would find him.” “But I was glad that in the end – obviously he was at Celtic for a long time – that he went to (Manchester) United and Barcelona and people then, not just in Scotland”
