After learning that her family’s $22,000 loan to the bride was really utilized to support the groom’s family, a woman declined to go to her sister’s destination wedding.
A recent post on the well-known “Am I The A**hole?” On a Reddit site, a woman questioned whether she was wrong for skipping her sister Katie’s and her fiancé Chris’s Dubai wedding. It is taking place over four days, and she stated that her sister has “always wanted a lavish wedding.”
As the maid-of-honor, the woman revealed that 70 guests, including her husband and parents, would be staying at the same hotel as the wedding party, and that visitors would be spending around £2900 ($3,740) each for the hotel and airfare to Dubai.
The Reddit user claimed that the groom’s family, which consists of his parents, two brothers, and nephew, is staying at the hotel and that “they are well off.” Nevertheless, the couple asked the bride’s family for a loan: “Six months ago, Chris and Katie came to us and asked to borrow £17,000 [$21,900],” the woman wrote.
The venue had raised the price, Dubai legislation was different, they claimed, “they paid this money or they lost the lot,” she added, emphasizing that the loan will be paid back over time.
While her parents lent them the remaining £10,000 ($12,898), the former maid-of-honor offered her sister £7,000 ($9,028).
But the woman found out through rumors that the loan was actually for Chris’s family to go to Dubai, not the venue, and that they declined to attend once they saw how much the wedding would cost.
She claimed, “She got very defensive and said this was the fairest way she could think of doing it, it is hard enough organizing a wedding, etc.” when the Reddit user confronted her sister about her deception.
But when I asked, why did you lie about the purpose of the $17,000 and claim it was a venue issue if you truly believed this was the most equitable way to handle it? She was unable to respond.
The bride’s parents still intend to attend the wedding even though they “are quite disappointed” about Katie and Chris’s deception. But according to her sister, she has “pulled out” of the occasion.
Regarding the bride and groom, she wrote, “It seems to me that my parents are being taken advantage of — and if they could not afford to pay for both our and Chris’s parents as well as his brothers and nephew, then they should not have only paid for the four parents or no one at all.” “They should not have misled about it in particular.”
Since she pulled out, she said, Katie and Chris have been phoning her to beg her to go to the wedding and accuse her of “ruining their day.”

She clarified a few points in an edit to the post, stating that she has a loan repayment plan in a contract created by her husband’s brother, which stipulates that the bride and groom must reimburse her and her parents within a year of the wedding. She added that, in spite of everything that had transpired, asking for her money back now felt “like a step too far,” as she did not want to “actively try to ruin” the wedding just weeks before it was scheduled.
The post has received over 6,700 upvotes on Reddit, indicating its rapid popularity. As they questioned the couple for holding such an expensive wedding in Dubai in the first place, many people in the comments defended the bride’s sister.
“Why are they having this lavish wedding—four days!—in Dubai, of all places, if having the family there was important? One person wrote, “Why not somewhere nearby and less expensive to travel to?”
A local or nearby wedding might be just as beautiful, therefore it is a shame they felt the need to have such a lavish destination wedding. Additionally, having a large loan hanging over your head makes it difficult to celebrate and have fun,” someone else said.
They told falsehoods to defraud you and your parents of thousands of pounds. That is really shady of them; in fact, it is fraud. One person remarked, “They are the ones that ruin their wedding by lying.”
“I would oppose the falsehood they taught you and your parents in a similar manner. In order to pay for her in-law’s trip, [Katie and Chris] basically extorted money from you under false pretenses. Another said, “That is not right and it sets a bad tone for the start of the marriage.;
